The name of this surah is a reference to the day of judgment. The first part of this surah describes a vivid depiction of that day.

On resurrection day all people have done in this world will be put into a scale. Those weights heavy will be rewarded with paradise and those weight light will be punished. Good deeds will be put into one side and the bad deeds will be on the other side of the scale, if good deeds weigh heavier than the bad deeds, that person will be rewarded.
