It is an earlier Meccan surah, believed to have been received by the prophet Muhammad shortly after chapter 12, Yusuf, during his last year in Mecca. This Surah takes its name from 80th ayah which refers to Mada'in Saleh, a pre-Islamic archaeological site, occasionally called Al-Hijr, or Hegra.
Allah warns the people who reject the message. In this Surah we are reminded of the fate the people of Prophet Lut, the Thamud and other groups faced when they had denied the message. From ayah 1-15 it addresses the Meccan idolaters who ridicule and ostracize Prophet Muhammad, they challenge Him to bring an Angel to them to prove his truthfulness. The Surah was also sent down to provide steadfastness and resilience in the wake of this backlash and mockery. He is reminded in this Surah of the Prophets who came before him, even making the comparison to liken the Idolaters to Iblis who was also rebellious when confronted with facing Adam.
Unbelievers will one day wish for themselves to be Muslims. Every nation has its day of grace. Muhammad charged with demoniacal possession by the disbelievers The unbelievers say a true prophet would have come with a company of angels but Angels are not sent to gratify curiosity, but to minister judgment.
God is the author and preserver of the Quran. The former prophets were laughed at and scorned. God declares his glory in the skies and the earth, He is active in every part of Nature and He is the God of life, death, and judgment.
Iblís was among the angels who refused to bow to Adam and for that Iblis was cursed and respited until the judgment. After this Satan declares to God his purpose to seduce men and was given permission. The seven gates of hell will receive Satan’s followers and Paradise joys in store for true believers.
Later ayat also talk about The story of Abraham and Lot. The scoffing inhabitants of Al Hajr reject their prophets though accompanied with miracles. Muhammad was warned not to envy the prosperity of infidels. The enemies of God will surely be punished.
