Surah Al-Hijr

Surah Al-Hijr (The Rocky Tract) is the 15. surah in Quran.Al-Hijr surah is listed as the 54. by revelation order.

The meaning of surah Al-Hijr is The Rocky Tract. In total this surah is consist of 99 auahs. You can read Al-Hijr by word by word if you would like to examine it in details or click one of the ayahs below to check that ayah only.

It is an earlier Meccan surah, believed to have been received by the prophet Muhammad shortly after chapter 12, Yusuf, during his last year in Mecca. This Surah takes its name from 80th ayah which refers to Mada'in Saleh, a pre-Islamic archaeological site, occasionally called Al-Hijr, or Hegra.

Allah warns the people who reject the message. In this Surah we are reminded of the fate the people of Prophet Lut, the Thamud and other groups faced when they had denied the message. From ayah 1-15 it addresses the Meccan idolaters who ridicule and ostracize Prophet Muhammad, they challenge Him to bring an Angel to them to prove his truthfulness. The Surah was also sent down to provide steadfastness and resilience in the wake of this backlash and mockery. He is reminded in this Surah of the Prophets who came before him, even making the comparison to liken the Idolaters to Iblis who was also rebellious when confronted with facing Adam.

Unbelievers will one day wish for themselves to be Muslims. Every nation has its day of grace. Muhammad charged with demoniacal possession by the disbelievers The unbelievers say a true prophet would have come with a company of angels but Angels are not sent to gratify curiosity, but to minister judgment.

God is the author and preserver of the Quran. The former prophets were laughed at and scorned. God declares his glory in the skies and the earth, He is active in every part of Nature and He is the God of life, death, and judgment.

Iblís was among the angels who refused to bow to Adam and for that Iblis was cursed and respited until the judgment. After this Satan declares to God his purpose to seduce men and was given permission. The seven gates of hell will receive Satan’s followers and Paradise joys in store for true believers.

Later ayat also talk about The story of Abraham and Lot. The scoffing inhabitants of Al Hajr reject their prophets though accompanied with miracles. Muhammad was warned not to envy the prosperity of infidels. The enemies of God will surely be punished.

Wa qaaloo yaaa aiyuhal lazee nuzzila ‘alaihiz Zikru innaka lamajnoon

And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.
Wa iz qaala Rabbuka lilmalaaa’ ikati innee khaaliqum basharam min salsaalim min hama im masnoon

And the people of the city came rejoicing.

By your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.
La’amruka innahum lafee sakratihim ya’mahoon

15:73
So the shriek seized them at sunrise.
Fa akhazat humus saihatu mushriqeen

15:74
And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.

And indeed, they [i.e., those cities] are [situated] on an established road.
Wa innahaa labi sabeelim muqeem

15:77
Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.
Inna fee zaalika la Aayatal lilmu’mineen

15:78
And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,
Wa in kaana Ashaabul Aikati lazaalimeen

15:79
So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.

And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.
Wa laqad kazzaba ashaabul Hijril mursaleen

And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.
Wa kaanoo yanhitoona minal jibaali buyootan aamineen

15:83
But the shriek seized them at early morning,
Fa akhazat humus saihatu musbiheen

15:84
So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.
Famaaa aghnaa ‘anhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon

15:85
And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

15:86
Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.
Inna Rabbaka Huwal khallaaqul ‘aleem

15:87
And We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’ān.
Wa laqad aatainaaka sab’am minal masaanee wal Qur-aanal ‘Azeem
ولقد ءاتينـك سبعا من ٱلمثانى وٱلقرءان ٱلعظيم
15:88
Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers.
Laa tamuddanna ‘ainaika ilaa maa matta ‘naa biheee azwaajam minhum wa laa tahzan ‘alaihim wakhfid janaahaka lilmu ‘mineen

15:89
And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -
Wa qul inneee anan nazeerul mubeen
وقل إنى أنا ٱلنذير ٱلمبين
15:90
Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators
Kamaaa anzalnaa ‘alal muqtasimeen

15:91
Who have made the Qur’ān into portions.
Allazeena ja’alul Quraana’ideen

15:92
So by your Lord, We will surely question them all
Fawa Rabbika lanas’a lannahum ajma’een

15:93
About what they used to do.
‘Ammaa kaanoo ya’maloon

15:94
Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.
Fasda’ bimaa tu’maru wa a’rid anil mushrikeen

15:95
Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers
Innaa kafainaakal mustahzi’een

15:96
Who make [equal] with Allāh another deity. But they are going to know.
Allazeena yaj’aloona ma’al laahi ilaahan aakhar; fasawfa ya’lamoon
ٱلذين يجعلون مع ٱلله إلـها ءاخر فسوف يعلمون
15:97
And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.
Wa laqad na’lamu annaka yadeequ sadruka bimaa yaqooloon
ولقد نعلم أنك يضيق صدرك بما يقولون
15:98
So exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].
Fasbbih bihamdi Rabbika wa kum minas saajideen
فسبح بحمد ربك وكن من ٱلسـجدين
15:99
And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].
