The main theme or subject matter of this chapter is about the day of judgment. It paints a picture of the scenes of that day. This surah clearly directs its message toward the unbelievers in Mecca. Indeed, it covers themes of rejection, truth, and punishment, all of which are addressed in stories of previous peoples. It describes the flood that washed away deniers of Prophet Noah, punishment of the people of Ad and of Prophet Lot, what happened to the Pharaoh who did not listen to Moses.
The first eight verses distinctly refer to events on the Day of Judgment, especially the fates of the disbelievers when the hour comes near. In this surah Quran references itself four times and always iterates that it was made easy to understand and learn for the people. It is important to note that this surah uses the word Quran which means recitation instead of the word Dhikr which means remembrance.
