This surah takes its name from the word mentioned in the first ayah.

The main theme of this surah is to warn people to abstain from evil on this planet. It warns us that those who do sin will face an inevitable punishment.

The surah talks about disbelievers that were punished for what they have done to the believers just for believing and following Allah. The surah talks about Pharaoh and Thamúd examples to warn those who reject the Quran and the on the final ayah it says the Quran is kept in the preserved table.

85:1

By the sky containing great stars

Wassamaaa’i zaatil burooj

وٱلسماء ذات ٱلبروج

85:2

And [by] the promised Day

Wal yawmil maw’ood

وٱليوم ٱلموعود

85:3

And [by] the witness and what is witnessed,

Wa shaahidinw wa mashhood

وشاهد ومشهود

85:4

Destroyed [i.e., cursed] were the companions of the trench

Qutila as haabul ukhdood

قتل أصحـب ٱلأخدود

85:5

[Containing] the fire full of fuel,

Annaari zaatil waqood

ٱلنار ذات ٱلوقود

85:6

When they were sitting near it.

Iz hum ‘alaihaa qu’ood

إذ هم عليها قعود

85:7

And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.

Wa hum ‘alaa maa yaf’aloona bilmu ‘mineena shuhood

وهم على ما يفعلون بٱلمؤمنين شهود

85:8

And they resented them not except because they believed in Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,

Wa maa naqamoo minhum illaaa aiyu’minoo billaahil ‘azeezil Hameed

وما نقموا منهم إلا أن يؤمنوا بٱلله ٱلعزيز ٱلحميد

85:9

To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh, over all things, is Witness.

Allazee lahoo mulkus samaawaati wal ard; wallaahu ‘alaa kulli shai ‘in Shaheed

ٱلذى لهۥ ملك ٱلسمـوت وٱلأرض وٱلله على كل شىء شهيد

85:10

Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.

Innal lazeena fatanul mu’mineena wal mu’minaati summa lam yatooboo falahum ‘azaabu Jahannama wa lahum ‘azaabul hareeq

إن ٱلذين فتنوا ٱلمؤمنين وٱلمؤمنـت ثم لم يتوبوا فلهم عذاب جهنم ولهم عذاب ٱلحريق

85:11

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.

Innal lazeena aamanoo wa ‘amilus saalihaati lahum Jannaatun tajree min tahtihal anhaar; zaalikal fawzul kabeer

إن ٱلذين ءامنوا وعملوا ٱلصـلحـت لهم جنـت تجرى من تحتها ٱلأنهـر ذلك ٱلفوز ٱلكبير

85:12

Indeed, the assault [i.e., vengeance] of your Lord is severe.

Inna batsha Rabbika lashadeed

إن بطش ربك لشديد

85:13

Indeed, it is He who originates [creation] and repeats.
