It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. This surah takes its name from the word mentioned in the first ayah.
The surah starts with an oath by the star but the word used Tariq could actually mean something else. It is possible that this is not a star but a pulsar. The following ayat describes this star as the bright/piercing star. Pulsars are 10 times brighter than normal stars and they pulse continuously, making knocking/thumping sounds. The root word of Tariq also means knocking which strengthens this meaning.
Every soul has its guardian angel and God can easily raise the dead. All secrets that were kept by humans will be revealed when they reach judgment day. The Prophet was exhorted to bear patiently.
