Surah Ash-Shams


Surah Ash-Shams (The Sun) is the 91. surah in Quran.Ash-Shams surah is listed as the 26. by revelation order.

The meaning of surah Ash-Shams is The Sun. In total this surah is consist of 15 auahs. You can read Ash-Shams by word by word if you would like to examine it in details or click one of the ayahs below to check that ayah only.

It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. This surah takes its name from the word mentioned in the first ayah.

The surah opens with a series of solemn oaths sworn on various astronomical phenomena, the first of which, sun. The surah talks about how God created humans proportioned and inspired them to be wicked and its righteous, whoever can purify their soul and become a good person will be rewarded accordingly and the ones who cannot will be punished. 

The last part of the surah tells what happened to the Thamud tribe. The prophet Salih has urged them to worship God alone, and brought them a she-camel as a miracle. They disobeyed and killed the camel and God has destroyed them.

91:1
By the sun and its brightness
Wash shamsi wa duhaa haa
وٱلشمس وضحىها
91:2
And [by] the moon when it follows it
Wal qamari izaa talaa haa
وٱلقمر إذا تلىها
91:3
And [by] the day when it displays it
Wannahaari izaa jallaa haa
وٱلنهار إذا جلىها
91:4
And [by] the night when it covers [i.e., conceals] it
Wallaili izaa yaghshaa haa
وٱليل إذا يغشىها
91:5
And [by] the sky and He who constructed it
Wassamaaa’i wa maa banaahaa
وٱلسماء وما بنىها
91:6
And [by] the earth and He who spread it
Wal ardi wa maa tahaahaa
وٱلأرض وما طحىها
91:7
And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it
Wa nafsinw wa maa sawwaahaa
ونفس وما سوىها
91:8
And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,
Fa-alhamahaa fujoorahaa wa taqwaahaa
فألهمها فجورها وتقوىها
91:9
He has succeeded who purifies it,
Qad aflaha man zakkaahaa
قد أفلح من زكىها
91:10
And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].
Wa qad khaaba man dassaahaa
وقد خاب من دسىها
91:11
Thamūd denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression,
Kazzabat Samoodu bi taghwaahaaa
كذبت ثمود بطغوىها
91:12
When the most wretched of them was sent forth.
Izim ba’asa ashqaahaa
إذ ٱنبعث أشقىها
91:13
And the messenger of Allāh [i.e., Ṣāliḥ] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allāh or [prevent her from] her drink."
Faqaala lahum Rasoolul laahi naaqatal laahi wa suqiyaahaa
فقال لهم رسول ٱلله ناقة ٱلله وسقيـها
91:14
But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them].
Fakazzaboohu fa’aqaroohaa fadamdama ‘alaihim Rabbuhum bizambihim fasaw waahaa
فكذبوه فعقروها فدمدم عليهم ربهم بذنبهم فسوىها
91:15
And He does not fear the consequence thereof.
Wa laa yakhaafu’uqbaahaa
ولا يخاف عقبـها
