Surah Al-Alaq


Surah Al-Alaq (Clinging Substance) is the 96. surah in Quran.Al-Alaq surah is listed as the 1. by revelation order.

It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. This surah takes its name from the word mentioned in the second ayah. Another name for this surah comes from the word "Iqrā", which means "Read" in the first verse.

This is considered to be the first Surah ever revealed to the prophet Muhammad. This was the first command to the prophet, “Read: In the name of your Lord”. God has taught humans what they did not know. Humans consider themselves above all and deny the truth. 

The last part of this surah is considered to be about the interaction of prophet Muhammad and Abu Jahl, Quraish leader, trying to prevent the prophet from praying.

96:1
Recite in the name of your Lord who created
Iqra bismi rab bikal lazee khalaq
ٱقرأ بٱسم ربك ٱلذى خلق
96:2
Created man from a clinging substance.
Khalaqal insaana min ‘alaq
خلق ٱلإنسـن من علق
96:3
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -
Iqra wa rab bukal akram
ٱقرأ وربك ٱلأكرم
96:4
Who taught by the pen
Al lazee ‘allama bil qalam
ٱلذى علم بٱلقلم
96:5
Taught man that which he knew not.
‘Al lamal insaana ma lam y’alam
علم ٱلإنسـن ما لم يعلم
96:6
No! [But] indeed, man transgresses
Kallaa innal insaana layatghaa
كلا إن ٱلإنسـن ليطغى
96:7
Because he sees himself self-sufficient.
Ar-ra aahus taghnaa
أن رءاه ٱستغنى
96:8
Indeed, to your Lord is the return.
Innna ilaa rabbikar ruj’aa
إن إلى ربك ٱلرجعى
96:9
Have you seen the one who forbids
Ara-aital lazee yanhaa
أرءيت ٱلذى ينهى
96:10
A servant when he prays?
‘Abdan iza sallaa
عبدا إذا صلى
96:11
Have you seen if he is upon guidance
Ara-aita in kana ‘alal hudaa
أرءيت إن كان على ٱلهدى
96:12
Or enjoins righteousness?
Au amara bit taqwaa
أو أمر بٱلتقوى
96:13
Have you seen if he denies and turns away -
Ara-aita in kaz zaba wa ta walla
أرءيت إن كذب وتولى
96:14
Does he not know that Allāh sees?
Alam y’alam bi-an nal lahaa yaraa
ألم يعلم بأن ٱلله يرى
96:15
No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock
Kalla la illam yantahi la nasfa’am bin nasiyah
كلا لئن لم ينته لنسفعا بٱلناصية
96:16
A lying, sinning forelock.
Nasiyatin kazi batin khaatiah
ناصية كـذبة خاطئة
96:17
Then let him call his associates;
Fal yad’u naadiyah
فليدع ناديهۥ
96:18
We will call the angels of Hell.
Sanad ‘uz zabaaniyah
سندع ٱلزبانية
96:19
No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].
Kalla; la tuti’hu wasjud waqtarib (make sajda)
كلا لا تطعه وٱسجد وٱقترب
