Surah Al-Fatiḥa

Surah Fatiha is called “the opening/the opener” for being the first Surah of the Qur’an. It is regarded by most to be an early Meccan surah. Al-Fatiha is also known by several other names, such as Al-Hamd (The Praise), As-Salah (The Prayer), Umm al-Kitab (Mother of the Book). The word itself comes from the root f-t-ḥ (ف ت ح‎), which means "to open, explain, disclose, conquer".

The contents of this Surah itself are about the nature of Allah in the first four verses. It begins with the bismillah, claiming his merciful nature, then recognizes and praises His disposition as being the Lord of the worlds, and the king of the day of judgment. The middle part of the Surah deals with our relationship to the creator, it is he we worship. We put our complete trust in Him, and we ask for his help alone. In the last two verses, it asks for guidance, if Allah is to bestow his favours on us nothing can befall us, we can’t be led astray.

In the name of Allāh, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Bismillah hir rahman nir raheem
بسم ٱلله ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم

[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds -
Alhamdu lillaahi Rabbil ‘aalameen
ٱلحمد لله رب ٱلعلمين

The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,
Ar-Rahmaanir-Raheem
ٱلرحمن ٱلرحيم

Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
Maaliki Yawmid-Deen
ملك يوم ٱلدين
1:5
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
Iyyaaka na’budu wa lyyaaka nasta’een
إياك نعبد وإياك نستعين

Guide us to the straight path -
Ihdinas-Siraatal-Mustaqeem
ٱهدنا ٱلصرط ٱلمستقيم
1:7
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
Siraatal-lazeena an’amta ‘alaihim ghayril-maghdoobi ‘alaihim wa lad-daaalleen
صرط ٱلذين أنعمت عليهم غير ٱلمغضوب عليهم ولا ٱلضالين
