Surah As-Saffat

Surah As-Saffat (Lined up in rows) is the 37. surah in Quran.As-Saffat surah is listed as the 56. by revelation order.

The meaning of surah As-Saffat is Lined up in rows. In total this surah is consist of 182 auahs. You can read As-Saffat by word by word if you would like to examine it in details or click one of the ayahs below to check that ayah only.

It is considered to be an Meccan surah as it was revealed in Mecca. The word has several meanings such as; those who are lined up in rows, Those who rank themselves in Order and Ranged in Row. It argued that it was revealed in the second Mecca period.

Although named Al-Saffat, the general theme of this Surah is the unity of God and His power to greatly reward and punish. We see in this Surah elaborations on the punishment of disbelievers and rewards of believers in the Day of Judgment but also God's examples of how a true believer should be through enumerations of biblical figures.

The name comes from the first ayah in the surah where angels will line up for God on the day of the Judgement.

The surah has two main themes The surah starts with the day of judgment and talks in detail what angels will do, what will happen to believers and disbelievers and discussion between prophet and the angels on the one side and disbelievers on the other side.

Second part of the surah talks about the earlier prophets of God. We see snapshots of stories about Abraham, Moses, Aaron, Elijah and Lot included in this section to serve the same purpose: pointing out God's rewards to his true servants instead of limiting oneself in counting these stories as they occurred, as the Bible does.

By those [angels] lined up in rows

Wassaaaffaati saffaa

وٱلصـفـت صفا

And those who drive [the clouds]

Fazzaajiraati zajraa

فٱلزجرت زجرا

And those who recite the message,

Fattaaliyaati Zikra

فٱلتـليـت ذكرا

Indeed, your God is One,

Inna Illaahakum la Waahid

إن إلـهكم لوحد

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.

Rabbus samaawaati wal ardi wa maa bainahumaa wa Rabbul mashaariq

رب ٱلسمـوت وٱلأرض وما بينهما ورب ٱلمشـرق

Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

Innaa zaiyannas samaaa ‘ad dunyaa bizeenatinil kawaakib

إنا زينا ٱلسماء ٱلدنيا بزينة ٱلكواكب

And as protection against every rebellious devil

Wa hifzam min kulli Shaitaanim maarid

وحفظا من كل شيطـن مارد

[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,

Laa yassamma ‘oona ilal mala ‘il a’alaa wa yuqzafoona min kulli jaanib

لا يسمعون إلى ٱلملإ ٱلأعلى ويقذفون من كل جانب

Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,

Duhooranw wa lahum ‘azaabunw waasib

دحورا ولهم عذاب واصب

Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].

Illaa man khatifal khatfata fa atba’ahoo shihaabun saaqib

إلا من خطف ٱلخطفة فأتبعهۥ شهاب ثاقب

Then inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created them [i.e., men] from sticky clay.

Fastaftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqnaa; innaa khalaqnaahum min teenil laazib

فٱستفتهم أهم أشد خلقا أم من خلقنا إنا خلقنـهم من طين لازب

But you wonder, while they mock,

Bal’ajibta wa yaskharoon

بل عجبت ويسخرون

And when they are reminded, they remember not.

Wa izaa zukkiroo laa yazkuroon

وإذا ذكروا لا يذكرون

And when they see a sign, they ridicule.

Wa izaa ra aw Aayatany yastaskhiroon

وإذا رأوا ءاية يستسخرون

And say, "This is not but obvious magic.

Wa qaalooo in haazaa illaa sihrum mubeen

وقالوا إن هـذا إلا سحر مبين

When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

‘A-izaa mitnaa wa kunnaa turaabanw wa ‘izaaman ‘a innaa lamab’oosoon

أءذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظـما أءنا لمبعوثون

And our forefathers [as well]?"

Awa aabaa’unal awwaloon

أوءاباؤنا ٱلأولون

Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."

Qul na’am wa antum daakhiroon

قل نعم وأنتم دخرون

It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

Fa innamaa hiya zajra tunw waahidatun fa izaa hum yanzuroon

فإنما هى زجرة وحدة فإذا هم ينظرون

They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."

Wa qaaloo yaa wailanaa haazaa Yawmud-Deen

وقالوا يـويلنا هـذا يوم ٱلدين

[They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

Haazaa Yawmul Faslil lazee kuntum bihee tukaziboon (section 1)

هـذا يوم ٱلفصل ٱلذى كنتم بهۦ تكذبون

[The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship

Uhshurul lazeena zalamoo wa azwaajahum wa maa kaanoo ya’budoon

ٱحشروا ٱلذين ظلموا وأزوجهم وما كانوا يعبدون

Other than Allāh, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

Min doonil laahi fahdoohum ilaa siraatil Jaheem

من دون ٱلله فٱهدوهم إلى صرط ٱلجحيم

And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."

Wa qifoohum innahum mas’ooloon

وقفوهم إنهم مسـولون

[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

Maa lakum laa tanaasaroon

ما لكم لا تناصرون

But they, that Day, are in surrender.

Bal humul Yawma mustaslimoon

بل هم ٱليوم مستسلمون

And they will approach one another asking [i.e., blaming] each other.

Wa aqbala ba’duhum ‘alaa ba’diny yatasaaa’aloon

وأقبل بعضهم على بعض يتساءلون

They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."

Qaalooo innakum kuntum taatoonanaa ‘anil yameen

قالوا إنكم كنتم تأتوننا عن ٱليمين

They [i.e., the oppressors] will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,

Qaaloo bal lam takoonoo mu’mineen

قالوا بل لم تكونوا مؤمنين

And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.

Wa maa kaana lanaa ‘alaikum min sultaanim bal kuntum qawman taagheen

وما كان لنا عليكم من سلطـن بل كنتم قوما طـغين

So the word [i.e., decree] of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].

Fahaqqa ‘alainaa qawlu Rabbinaaa innaa lazaaa’iqoon

فحق علينا قول ربنا إنا لذائقون

And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."

Fa aghwainaakum innaa kunnaa ghaaween

فأغوينـكم إنا كنا غـوين

So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.

Fa innahum Yawma’izin fil’azaabi mushtarikoon

فإنهم يومئذ فى ٱلعذاب مشتركون

Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.

Innaa kazaalika naf’alu bil mujrimeen

إنا كذلك نفعل بٱلمجرمين

Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allāh," were arrogant

Innahum kaanooo izaa qeela lahum laaa ilaaha illal laahu yastakbiroon

إنهم كانوا إذا قيل لهم لا إلـه إلا ٱلله يستكبرون

And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"

Wa yaqooloona a’innaa lataarikooo aalihatinaa lishaa’irim majnoon

ويقولون أئنا لتاركوا ءالهتنا لشاعر مجنون

Rather, he [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.

bal jaaa’a bilhaqqi wa saddaqal mursaleen

بل جاء بٱلحق وصدق ٱلمرسلين

Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,

Innakum lazaaa’iqul ‘azaabil aleem

إنكم لذائقوا ٱلعذاب ٱلأليم

And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -

Wa maa tujzawna illaa maa kuntum ta’maloon

وما تجزون إلا ما كنتم تعملون

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

Illaa ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen

إلا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصين

Those will have a provision determined -

Ulaaa’ika lahum rizqum ma’loom

أولـئك لهم رزق معلوم

Fruits; and they will be honored

Fa waakihu wa hum mukramoon

فوكه وهم مكرمون

In gardens of pleasure

Fee jannaatin Na’eem

فى جنـت ٱلنعيم

On thrones facing one another.

‘Alaa sururim mutaqaa bileen

على سرر متقـبلين

There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,

Yutaafu ‘alaihim bikaasim mim ma’een

يطاف عليهم بكأس من معين

White and delicious to the drinkers;

Baidaaa’a laz zatil lish shaaribeen

بيضاء لذة للشـربين

No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.

Laa feehaa ghawlunw wa laa hum ‘anhaa yunzafoon

لا فيها غول ولا هم عنها ينزفون

And with them will be women limiting [their] glances, with large, [beautiful] eyes,

Wa ‘indahum qaasiraatut tarfi ‘een

وعندهم قـصرت ٱلطرف عين

As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.

Ka annahunna baidum maknoon

كأنهن بيض مكنون

And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

Fa aqbala ba’duhum ‘alaa badiny yatasaaa ‘aloon

فأقبل بعضهم على بعض يتساءلون

A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth].

Qaala qaaa’ilum minhum innee kaana lee qareen

قال قائل منهم إنى كان لى قرين

Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

Yaqoolu ‘a innaka laminal musaddiqeen

يقول أءنك لمن ٱلمصدقين

That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

‘A-izaa mitnaa wa kunnaa turaabanw wa ‘izaaman ‘a innaa lamadeenoon

أءذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظـما أءنا لمدينون

He will say, "Would you [care to] look?"

Qaala hal antum muttali’oon

قال هل أنتم مطلعون

And he will look and see him in the midst of the Hellfire.

Fattala’a fara aahu fee sawaaa’il Jaheem

فٱطلع فرءاه فى سواء ٱلجحيم

He will say, "By Allāh, you almost ruined me.

Qaala tallaahi in kitta laturdeen

قال تٱلله إن كدت لتردين

If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].

Wa law laa ni’matu Rabbee lakuntu minal muhdareen

ولولا نعمة ربى لكنت من ٱلمحضرين

Then, are we not to die

Afamaa nahnu bimaiyiteen

أفما نحن بميتين

Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"

Illa mawtatanal oola wa maa nahnu bimu’azzabeen

إلا موتتنا ٱلأولى وما نحن بمعذبين

Indeed, this is the great attainment.

Inna haazaa lahuwal fawzul ‘azeem

إن هـذا لهو ٱلفوز ٱلعظيم

For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.

Limisli haaza falya’ma lil ‘aamiloon

لمثل هـذا فليعمل ٱلعـملون

Is that [i.e., Paradise] a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqūm?

Azaalika khairun nuzulan am shajaratuz Zaqqoom

أذلك خير نزلا أم شجرة ٱلزقوم

Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

Innaa ja’alnaahaa fitnatal lizzaalimeen

إنا جعلنـها فتنة للظـلمين

Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

Innahaa shajaratun takhruju feee aslil Jaheem

إنها شجرة تخرج فى أصل ٱلجحيم

Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

Tal’uhaa ka annahoo ru’oosush Shayaateen

طلعها كأنهۥ رءوس ٱلشيـطين

And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

Fa innahum la aakiloona minhaa famaali’oona minhal butoon

فإنهم لـاكلون منها فمالـون منها ٱلبطون

Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

Summa inna lahum ‘alaihaa lashawbam min hameem

ثم إن لهم عليها لشوبا من حميم

Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

Summa inna marji’ahum la ilal Jaheem

ثم إن مرجعهم لإلى ٱلجحيم

Indeed they found their fathers astray.

Innahum alfaw aabaaa’ahum daaalleen

إنهم ألفوا ءاباءهم ضالين

So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

Fahum ‘alaa aasaarihim yuhra’oon

فهم على ءاثـرهم يهرعون

And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

Wa laqad dalla qablahum aksarul awwaleen

ولقد ضل قبلهم أكثر ٱلأولين

And We had already sent among them warners.

Wa laqad arsalnaa feehim munzireen

ولقد أرسلنا فيهم منذرين

Then look how was the end of those who were warned -

Fanzur kaifa kaana ‘aaqibatul munzareen

فٱنظر كيف كان عـقبة ٱلمنذرين

But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

Illaa ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen (section 2)

إلا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصين

And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.

Wa laqad naadaanaa Noohun falani’mal mujeeboon

ولقد نادىنا نوح فلنعم ٱلمجيبون

And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

Wa najjainaahu wa ahlahoo minal karbil ‘azeem

ونجينـه وأهلهۥ من ٱلكرب ٱلعظيم

And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

Wa ja’alnaa zurriyyatahoo hummul baaqeen

وجعلنا ذريتهۥ هم ٱلباقين

And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Wa taraknaa ‘alaihi fil aakhireen

وتركنا عليه فى ٱلـاخرين

"Peace upon Noah among the worlds."

Salaamun ‘alaa Noohin fil ‘aalameen

سلـم على نوح فى ٱلعـلمين

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen

إنا كذلك نجزى ٱلمحسنين

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Innahoo min ‘ibaadinal mu’mineen

إنهۥ من عبادنا ٱلمؤمنين

Then We drowned the others [i.e., disbelievers].

Summa aghraqnal aakhareen

ثم أغرقنا ٱلـاخرين

And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,

Wa inna min shee’atihee la Ibraaheem

وإن من شيعتهۦ لإبرهيم

When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

Iz jaaa’a Rabbahoo bi qalbin saleem

إذ جاء ربهۥ بقلب سليم

[And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?

Iz qaala li abeehi wa qawmihee maazaa ta’budoon

إذ قال لأبيه وقومهۦ ماذا تعبدون

Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allāh you desire?

A’ifkan aalihatan doonal laahi tureedoon

أئفكا ءالهة دون ٱلله تريدون

Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"

Famaa zannukum bi Rabbil’aalameen

فما ظنكم برب ٱلعـلمين

And he cast a look at the stars.

Fanazara nazratan finnujoom

فنظر نظرة فى ٱلنجوم

And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."

Faqaala innee saqeem

فقال إنى سقيم

So they turned away from him, departing.

Fatawallaw ‘anhu mudbireen

فتولوا عنه مدبرين

Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?

Faraagha ilaaa aalihatihim faqaala alaa taakuloon

فراغ إلى ءالهتهم فقال ألا تأكلون

What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?".

Maa lakum laa tantiqoon

ما لكم لا تنطقون

And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.

Faraagha ‘alaihim darbam bilyameen

فراغ عليهم ضربا بٱليمين

Then they [i.e., the people] came toward him, hastening.

Fa aqbalooo ilaihi yaziffoon

فأقبلوا إليه يزفون

He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,

Qaala ata’budoona maa tanhitoon

قال أتعبدون ما تنحتون

While Allāh created you and that which you do?"

Wallaahu khalaqakum wa maa ta’maloon

وٱلله خلقكم وما تعملون

They said, "Construct for him a structure [i.e., furnace] and throw him into the burning fire."

Qaalub noo lahoo bun yaanan fa alqoohu fil jaheem

قالوا ٱبنوا لهۥ بنيـنا فألقوه فى ٱلجحيم

And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the most debased.

Fa araadoo bihee kaidan faja ‘alnaahumul asfaleen

فأرادوا بهۦ كيدا فجعلنـهم ٱلأسفلين

And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.

Wa qaala innee zaahibun ilaa Rabbee sa yahdeen

وقال إنى ذاهب إلى ربى سيهدين

My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."

Rabbi hab lee minas saaliheen

رب هب لى من ٱلصـلحين

So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.

Fabashsharnaahu bighulaamin haleem

فبشرنـه بغلـم حليم

And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allāh wills, of the steadfast."

Falamma balagha ma’a hus sa’ya qaala yaa buniya inneee araa fil manaami anneee azbahuka fanzur maazaa taraa; qaala yaaa abatif ‘al maa tu’maru satajidunee in shaaa’allaahu minas saabireen

فلما بلغ معه ٱلسعى قال يـبنى إنى أرى فى ٱلمنام أنى أذبحك فٱنظر ماذا ترى قال يـأبت ٱفعل ما تؤمر ستجدنى إن شاء ٱلله من ٱلصـبرين

And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,

Falammaaa aslamaa wa tallahoo liljabeen

فلما أسلما وتلهۥ للجبين

We called to him, "O Abraham,

Wa naadainaahu ai yaaaa Ibraheem

ونـدينـه أن يـإبرهيم

You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Qad saddaqtar ru’yaa; innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen

قد صدقت ٱلرءيا إنا كذلك نجزى ٱلمحسنين

Indeed, this was the clear trial.

Inna haazaa lahuwal balaaa’ul mubeen

إن هـذا لهو ٱلبلـؤا ٱلمبين

And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,

Wa fadainaahu bizibhin ‘azeem

وفدينـه بذبح عظيم

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Wa taraknaa ‘alaihi fil aakhireen

وتركنا عليه فى ٱلـاخرين

"Peace upon Abraham."

Salaamun ‘alaaa Ibraaheem

سلـم على إبرهيم

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Kazaalika najzil muhsineen

كذلك نجزى ٱلمحسنين

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Innahoo min ‘ibaadinal mu’mineen

إنهۥ من عبادنا ٱلمؤمنين

And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.

Wa bashsharnaahu bi Ishaaqa Nabiyam minas saaliheen

وبشرنـه بإسحـق نبيا من ٱلصـلحين

And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself [i.e., sinner].

Wa baaraknaa ‘alaihi wa ‘alaaa Ishaaq; wa min zurriyya tihimaa muhsinunw wa zaalimul linafsihee mubeen (section 3)

وبـركنا عليه وعلى إسحـق ومن ذريتهما محسن وظالم لنفسهۦ مبين

And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.

Wa laqad mananna alaa Moosaa wa Haaroon

ولقد مننا على موسى وهـرون

And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,

Wa najjainaahumaa wa qawmahumaa minal karbil ‘azeem

ونجينـهما وقومهما من ٱلكرب ٱلعظيم

And We supported them so it was they who overcame.

Wa nasarnaahum fakaanoo humul ghaalibeen

ونصرنـهم فكانوا هم ٱلغـلبين

And We gave them the explicit Scripture [i.e., the Torah],

Wa aatainaahumal Kitaabal mustabeen

وءاتينـهما ٱلكتـب ٱلمستبين

And We guided them on the straight path.

Wa hadainaahumus Siraatal Mustaqeem

وهدينـهما ٱلصرط ٱلمستقيم

And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:

Wa taraknaa ‘alaihimaa fil aakhireen

وتركنا عليهما فى ٱلـاخرين

"Peace upon Moses and Aaron."

Salaamun ‘alaa Moosaa wa Haaroon

سلـم على موسى وهـرون

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen

إنا كذلك نجزى ٱلمحسنين

Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.

Innahumaa min ‘ibaadinal mu’mineen

إنهما من عبادنا ٱلمؤمنين

And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,

Wa inna Ilyaasa laminal mursaleen

وإن إلياس لمن ٱلمرسلين

When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allāh?

Iz qaala liqawmiheee alaa tattaqoon

إذ قال لقومهۦ ألا تتقون

Do you call upon Baʿl and leave the best of creators -

Atad’oona Ba’lanw wa tazaroona ahsanal khaaliqeen

أتدعون بعلا وتذرون أحسن ٱلخـلقين

Allāh, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"

Allaaha Rabbakum wa Rabba aabaaa’ikumul awwaleen

ٱلله ربكم ورب ءابائكم ٱلأولين

And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],

Fakazzaboohu fa inna hum lamuhdaroon

فكذبوه فإنهم لمحضرون

Except the chosen servants of Allāh.

Illaa ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen

إلا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصين

And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

Wa taraknaa ‘alaihi fil aakhireen

وتركنا عليه فى ٱلـاخرين

"Peace upon Elias."

Salaamun ‘alaaa Ilyaaseen

سلـم على إل ياسين

Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

Innaa kazaalika najzil muhsineen

إنا كذلك نجزى ٱلمحسنين

Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

Innahoo min ‘ibaadinal mu’mineen

إنهۥ من عبادنا ٱلمؤمنين

And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.

Wa inna Lootal laminal mursaleen

وإن لوطا لمن ٱلمرسلين

[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,

Iz najjainaahu wa ahlahooo ajma’een

إذ نجينـه وأهلهۥ أجمعين

Except an old woman [i.e., his wife] among those who remained [with the evildoers].

Illaa ‘ajoozan fil ghaabireen

إلا عجوزا فى ٱلغـبرين

Then We destroyed the others.

Summa dammarnal aakhareen

ثم دمرنا ٱلـاخرين

And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

Wa innakum latamurroona ‘alaihim musbiheen

وإنكم لتمرون عليهم مصبحين

And at night. Then will you not use reason?

Wa billail; afalaa ta’qiloon (section 4)

وبٱليل أفلا تعقلون

And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.

Wa inna Yoonusa laminal mursaleen

وإن يونس لمن ٱلمرسلين

[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.

Iz abaqa ilal fulkil mash hoon

إذ أبق إلى ٱلفلك ٱلمشحون

And he drew lots and was among the losers.

Fasaahama fakaana minal mudhadeen

فساهم فكان من ٱلمدحضين

Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.

Faltaqamahul hootu wa huwa muleem

فٱلتقمه ٱلحوت وهو مليم

And had he not been of those who exalt Allāh,

Falaw laaa annahoo kaana minal musabbiheen

فلولا أنهۥ كان من ٱلمسبحين

He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.

Lalabisa fee batniheee ilaa Yawmi yub’asoon

للبث فى بطنهۦ إلى يوم يبعثون

But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.

Fanabaznaahu bil’araaa’i wa huwa saqeem

فنبذنـه بٱلعراء وهو سقيم

And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.

Wa ambatnaa ‘alaihi shajaratam mai yaqteen

وأنبتنا عليه شجرة من يقطين

And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.

Wa arsalnaahu ilaa mi’ati alfin aw yazeedoon

وأرسلنـه إلى مائة ألف أو يزيدون

And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.

Fa aamanoo famatta’ naahum ilaa heen

فـامنوا فمتعنـهم إلى حين

So inquire of them, [O Muḥammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?

Fastaftihim ali Rabbikal banaatu wa lahumul banoon

فٱستفتهم ألربك ٱلبنات ولهم ٱلبنون

Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"

Am khalaqnal malaaa’i kata inaasanw wa hum shaahidoon

أم خلقنا ٱلملـئكة إنـثا وهم شـهدون

Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,

Alaaa innahum min ifkihim la yaqooloon

ألا إنهم من إفكهم ليقولون

"Allāh has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.

Waladal laahu wa innahum lakaaziboon

ولد ٱلله وإنهم لكـذبون

Has He chosen daughters over sons?

Astafal banaati ‘alal baneen

أصطفى ٱلبنات على ٱلبنين

What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?

Maa lakum kaifa tahkumoon

ما لكم كيف تحكمون

Then will you not be reminded?

Afalaa tazakkaroon

أفلا تذكرون

Or do you have a clear authority?

Am lakum sultaanum mubeen

أم لكم سلطـن مبين

Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.

Faatoo bi Kitaabikum in kuntum saadiqeen

فأتوا بكتـبكم إن كنتم صـدقين

And they have made [i.e., claimed] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought [to punishment].

Wa ja’aloo bainahoo wa bainal jinnati nasabaa; wa laqad ‘alimatil jinnatu innahum lamuhdaroon

وجعلوا بينهۥ وبين ٱلجنة نسبا ولقد علمت ٱلجنة إنهم لمحضرون

Exalted is Allāh above what they describe,

Subhaanal laahi ‘ammaa yasifoon

سبحـن ٱلله عما يصفون

Except the chosen servants of Allāh [who do not share in that sin].

Illaa ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen

إلا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصين

So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,

Fa innakum wa maa ta’budoon

فإنكم وما تعبدون

You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

Maaa antum ‘alaihi bi faaatineen

ما أنتم عليه بفـتنين

Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.

Illaa man huwa saalil jaheem

إلا من هو صال ٱلجحيم

[The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.

Wa maa minnaaa illaa lahoo maqaamun ma’loom

وما منا إلا لهۥ مقام معلوم

And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].

Wa innaa lanah nus saaffoon

وإنا لنحن ٱلصافون

And indeed, we are those who exalt Allāh."

Wa innaa lanah nul musabbihoon

وإنا لنحن ٱلمسبحون

And indeed, they [i.e., the disbelievers] used to say,

Wa in kaanoo la yaqooloon

وإن كانوا ليقولون

"If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,

Law anna ‘indanaa zikram minal awwaleen

لو أن عندنا ذكرا من ٱلأولين

We would have been the chosen servants of Allāh."

Lakunna ‘ibaadal laahil mukhlaseen

لكنا عباد ٱلله ٱلمخلصين

But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know.

Fakafaroo bihee fasawfa ya’lamoon

فكفروا بهۦ فسوف يعلمون

And Our word [i.e., decree] has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

Wa laqad sabaqat Kalimatunaa li’ibaadinal mursa leen

ولقد سبقت كلمتنا لعبادنا ٱلمرسلين

[That] indeed, they would be those given victory

Innaa hum lahumul mansooroon

إنهم لهم ٱلمنصورون

And [that] indeed, Our soldiers [i.e., the believers] will be those who overcome.

Wa inna jundana lahumul ghaaliboon

وإن جندنا لهم ٱلغـلبون

So, [O Muḥammad], leave them for a time.

Fatawalla ‘anhum hatta heen

فتول عنهم حتى حين

And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.

Wa absirhum fasawfa yubsiroon

وأبصرهم فسوف يبصرون

Then for Our punishment are they impatient?

Afabi’azaabinaa yasta’jiloon

أفبعذابنا يستعجلون

But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

Fa izaa nazala bisaahatihim fasaaa’a sabaahul munzareen

فإذا نزل بساحتهم فساء صباح ٱلمنذرين

And leave them for a time.

Wa tawalla ‘anhum hattaa heen

وتول عنهم حتى حين

And see, for they are going to see.

Wa absir fasawfa yubsiroon

وأبصر فسوف يبصرون

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.

Subhaana Rabbika Rabbil ‘izzati ‘amma yasifoon

سبحـن ربك رب ٱلعزة عما يصفون

And peace upon the messengers.

Wa salaamun ‘alalmursaleen

وسلـم على ٱلمرسلين

And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

Walhamdu lillaahi Rabbil ‘aalameen (section 5)

وٱلحمد لله رب ٱلعـلمين
