It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. The surah takes its name from the opening ayah.
The afterlife is the main topic discussed in the chapter. Picking up from the preceding chapter, Ar-Rahman, which discusses the rewards of Paradise, this chapter also mentions them and then contrasts them with the punishment of hell.
The believers are of two parts: the pioneers and the believers. Pioneers are usually from earlier communities. and are reported to be the highest level. These usually consist of those closest to God. The other normal believers are the second group, which consists of those who do good and turn to Allah. The last group is those who deny and do evil, and Allah will judge them accordingly.
The word l-mashamati has been mistranslated as “left”, however its actual meaning is “who have lost themselves in evil “.
