Surah Al-Jinn


Surah Al-Jinn (The Jinn) is the 72. surah in Quran.Al-Jinn surah is listed as the 40. by revelation order.

The meaning of surah Al-Jinn is The Jinn. In total this surah is consist of 28 auahs. You can read Al-Jinn by word by word if you would like to examine it in details or click one of the ayahs below to check that ayah only.

It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. This surah discusses Jinn and this is where its name comes from. 

This surah discusses the invisible hidden creatures (the jinn) and their views and belief on the Prophet, Islam, resurrection, and the disbelievers.

The Jinn are invisible to the human eye and considered to live in their own dimension. In this surah, the jinn listen to the Quran being recited and completely awestruck and become believers. They blame the devil and the humans for misleading them. 

The jinn are just like humans, there are both believers and unbelievers and they will be punished just as well. The Jinn also talk about being able to listen to heavenly secrets but no more. Only God can see the unseen and his messenger only convey God’s message.

72:1
Say, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].
Qul oohiya ilaiya annna hustama’a nafarum minal jinni faqaalooo innaa sami’naa quraanan ajaba
قل أوحى إلى أنه ٱستمع نفر من ٱلجن فقالوا إنا سمعنا قرءانا عجبا
72:2
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.
Yahdeee ilar rushdi fa aamannaa bihee wa lan nushrika bi rabbinaaa ‘ahada
يهدى إلى ٱلرشد فـامنا بهۦ ولن نشرك بربنا أحدا
72:3
And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son
Wa annahoo Ta’aalaa jaddu Rabbinaa mat’takhaza saahibatanw wa laa walada
وأنهۥ تعـلى جد ربنا ما ٱتخذ صـحبة ولا ولدا
72:4
And that our foolish one [i.e., Iblees] has been saying about Allāh an excessive transgression.
Wa annahoo kaana yaqoolu safeehunaa ‘al allahi shatata
وأنهۥ كان يقول سفيهنا على ٱلله شططا
72:5
And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.
Wa annaa zanannaaa al lan taqoolal insu wal jinnu ‘al allahi kaziba
وأنا ظننا أن لن تقول ٱلإنس وٱلجن على ٱلله كذبا
72:6
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin].
Wa annahoo kaana rijaalun minal insi ya’oozoona bi rijaalin minal jinni fa zaadoohum rahaqa
وأنهۥ كان رجال من ٱلإنس يعوذون برجال من ٱلجن فزادوهم رهقا
72:7
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allāh would never send anyone [as a messenger].
Wa annahum zannoo kamaa zanantum al lany yab’asal laahu ‘ahada
وأنهم ظنوا كما ظننتم أن لن يبعث ٱلله أحدا
72:8
And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.
Wa annaa lamasnas samaaa’a fa wajadnaahaa muli’at harasan shadeedanw wa shuhuba
وأنا لمسنا ٱلسماء فوجدنـها ملئت حرسا شديدا وشهبا
72:9
And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
Wa annaa kunnaa naq’udu minhaa maqaa’ida lis’sam’i famany yastami’il ‘aana yajid lahoo shihaabar rasada
وأنا كنا نقعد منها مقـعد للسمع فمن يستمع ٱلـان يجد لهۥ شهابا رصدا
72:10
And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.
Wa annaa laa nadreee asharrun ureeda biman fil ardi ‘am ‘araada bihim rabbuhum rashada
وأنا لا ندرى أشر أريد بمن فى ٱلأرض أم أراد بهم ربهم رشدا
72:11
And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.
Wa annaa minnas saalihoona wa minnaa doona zaalika kunnaa taraaa’iqa qidada
وأنا منا ٱلصـلحون ومنا دون ذلك كنا طرائق قددا
72:12
And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allāh upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.
Wa annaa zanan naaa al lan nu’jizal laaha fil ardi wa lan nu’jizahoo haraba
وأنا ظننا أن لن نعجز ٱلله فى ٱلأرض ولن نعجزهۥ هربا
72:13
And when we heard the guidance [i.e., the Qur’ān], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.
Wa annaa lammaa sami’nal hudaaa aamannaa bihee famany yu’min bi rabbihee falaa yakhaafu bakhsanw wa laa rahaqa
وأنا لما سمعنا ٱلهدى ءامنا بهۦ فمن يؤمن بربهۦ فلا يخاف بخسا ولا رهقا
72:14
And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allāh], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course.
Wa annaa minnal muslimoona wa minnal qaasitoona faman aslama fa ulaaa’ika taharraw rashada
وأنا منا ٱلمسلمون ومنا ٱلقـسطون فمن أسلم فأولـئك تحروا رشدا
72:15
But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'
Wa ammal qaasitoona fa kaanoo li jahannama hataba
وأما ٱلقـسطون فكانوا لجهنم حطبا
72:16
And [Allāh revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain [i.e., provision].
Wa alla wis taqaamoo ‘alat tareeqati la asqaynaahum maa’an ghadaqa
وألو ٱستقـموا على ٱلطريقة لأسقينـهم ماء غدقا
72:17
So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord He will put into arduous punishment.
Linaftinahum feeh; wa many yu’rid ‘an zikri rabbihee yasluk hu ‘azaaban sa’ada
لنفتنهم فيه ومن يعرض عن ذكر ربهۦ يسلكه عذابا صعدا
72:18
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allāh, so do not invoke with Allāh anyone.
Wa annal masaajida lil laahi falaa tad’oo ma’al laahi ‘ahada
وأن ٱلمسـجد لله فلا تدعوا مع ٱلله أحدا
72:19
And that when the Servant [i.e., Prophet] of Allāh stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass."
Wa annahoo lammaa qaama ‘abdul laahi yad’oohu kaadoo yakoonoona ‘alaihi libada
وأنهۥ لما قام عبد ٱلله يدعوه كادوا يكونون عليه لبدا
72:20
Say, [O Muḥammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."
Qul innamaaa ad’oo rabbee wa laaa ushriku biheee ‘ahada
قل إنما أدعوا ربى ولا أشرك بهۦ أحدا
72:21
Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction."
Qul innee laaa amliku lakum darranw wa laa rashada
قل إنى لا أملك لكم ضرا ولا رشدا
72:22
Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allāh anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.
Qul innee lany yujeeranee minal laahi ‘ahadunw, wa lan ajida min doonihee multahada
قل إنى لن يجيرنى من ٱلله أحد ولن أجد من دونهۦ ملتحدا
72:23
But [I have for you] only notification from Allāh, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.
Illaa balaagham minal laahi wa risaalaatih; wa many ya’sil laaha wa rasoolahoo fa inna lahoo naara jahannama khaalideena feehaaa ‘abada
إلا بلـغا من ٱلله ورسـلـتهۦ ومن يعص ٱلله ورسولهۥ فإن لهۥ نار جهنم خـلدين فيها أبدا
72:24
[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.
Hattaaa izaa ra aw maa yoo’adoona fasaya’lamoona man ad’afu naasiranw wa aqallu ‘adada
حتى إذا رأوا ما يوعدون فسيعلمون من أضعف ناصرا وأقل عددا
72:25
Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period."
Qul in adreee a qareebum maa too’adoona am yaj’alu lahoo rabbeee ‘amada
قل إن أدرى أقريب ما توعدون أم يجعل لهۥ ربى أمدا
72:26
[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone
‘Aalimul ghaibi falaa yuzhiru alaa ghaibiheee ‘ahada
عـلم ٱلغيب فلا يظهر على غيبهۦ أحدا
72:27
Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before him [i.e., each messenger] and behind him observers
Illaa manir tadaa mir rasoolin fa innahoo yasluku min baini yadaihi wa min khalfihee rasada
إلا من ٱرتضى من رسول فإنهۥ يسلك من بين يديه ومن خلفهۦ رصدا
72:28
That he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] may know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number.
Liya’lama an qad ablaghoo risaalaati rabbihim wa ahaata bi maa ladaihim wa ahsaa kulla shai’in ‘adada
ليعلم أن قد أبلغوا رسـلـت ربهم وأحاط بما لديهم وأحصى كل شىء عددا
