Surah At-Takwir


Surah At-Takwir (The Overthrowing) is the 81. surah in Quran.At-Takwir surah is listed as the 7. by revelation order.

It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. The name of this surah is a reference to the judgment day.

This surah describes the signs of the resurrection day. First 14 ayat describes what will happen on the day of judgment. The rest of the surah makes an oath that the Quran is the word of Allah and admonition to all.

81:1
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]
Izash shamsu kuwwirat
إذا ٱلشمس كورت
81:2
And when the stars fall, dispersing,
Wa izan nujoomun kadarat
وإذا ٱلنجوم ٱنكدرت
81:3
And when the mountains are removed
Wa izal jibaalu suyyirat
وإذا ٱلجبال سيرت
81:4
And when full-term she-camels are neglected
Wa izal ‘ishaaru ‘uttilat
وإذا ٱلعشار عطلت
81:5
And when the wild beasts are gathered
Wa izal wuhooshu hushirat
وإذا ٱلوحوش حشرت
81:6
And when the seas are filled with flame
Wa izal bihaaru sujjirat
وإذا ٱلبحار سجرت
81:7
And when the souls are paired
Wa izan nufoosu zuwwijat
وإذا ٱلنفوس زوجت
81:8
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked
Wa izal maw’oodatu su’ilat
وإذا ٱلموءۥدة سئلت
81:9
For what sin she was killed
Bi ayyi zambin qutilat
بأى ذنب قتلت
81:10
And when the pages are spread [i.e., made public]
Wa izas suhufu nushirat
وإذا ٱلصحف نشرت
81:11
And when the sky is stripped away
Wa izas samaaa’u kushitat
وإذا ٱلسماء كشطت
81:12
And when Hellfire is set ablaze
Wa izal jaheemu su’-‘irat
وإذا ٱلجحيم سعرت
81:13
And when Paradise is brought near,
Wa izal jannatu uzlifat
وإذا ٱلجنة أزلفت
81:14
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].
‘Alimat nafsum maaa ahdarat
علمت نفس ما أحضرت
81:15
So I swear by the retreating stars -
Falaaa uqsimu bil khunnas
فلا أقسم بٱلخنس
81:16
Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]
Al jawaaril kunnas
ٱلجوار ٱلكنس
81:17
And by the night as it closes in
Wallaili izaa ‘as’as
وٱليل إذا عسعس
81:18
And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]
Wassubhi izaa tanaffas
وٱلصبح إذا تنفس
81:19
[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]
Innahoo laqawlu rasoolin kareem
إنهۥ لقول رسول كريم
81:20
[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],
Zee quwwatin ‘inda zil ‘arshi makeen
ذى قوة عند ذى ٱلعرش مكين
81:21
Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.
Mutaa’in samma ameen
مطاع ثم أمين
81:22
And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.
Wa maa saahibukum bimajnoon
وما صاحبكم بمجنون
81:23
And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.
Wa laqad ra aahu bilufuqil mubeen
ولقد رءاه بٱلأفق ٱلمبين
81:24
And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.
Wa maa huwa ‘alal ghaibi bidaneen
وما هو على ٱلغيب بضنين
81:25
And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].
Wa maa huwa biqawli shaitaanir rajeem
وما هو بقول شيطـن رجيم
81:26
So where are you going?
Fa ayna tazhaboon
فأين تذهبون
81:27
It is not except a reminder to the worlds
In huwa illaa zikrul lil’aalameen
إن هو إلا ذكر للعـلمين
81:28
For whoever wills among you to take a right course.
Liman shaaa’a minkum ai yastaqeem
لمن شاء منكم أن يستقيم
81:29
And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.
Wa maa tashaaa’oona illaaa ai yashaaa ‘al laahu Rabbul ‘Aalameen
وما تشاءون إلا أن يشاء ٱلله رب ٱلعـلمين
