Surah Al-Balad


Surah Al-Balad (The City) is the 90. surah in Quran.Al-Balad surah is listed as the 35. by revelation order.

It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. This surah takes its name from the word mentioned in the first ayah.

This surah talks about the choices humans can make in their life which will result in either being a believer or disbeliever. God has given us the ability and intelligence to judge the right from the wrong. It is ultimately our choice to choose which path we take, and the path we take will take us to the appropriate end.  The good will be awarded with paradise and the bad will be punished with hell.

90:1
I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]
Laaa uqsimu bihaazal balad
لا أقسم بهـذا ٱلبلد
90:2
And you, [O Muḥammad], are free of restriction in this city
Wa anta hillum bihaazal balad
وأنت حل بهـذا ٱلبلد
90:3
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
Wa waalidinw wa maa walad
ووالد وما ولد
90:4
We have certainly created man into hardship.
Laqad khalaqnal insaana fee kabad
لقد خلقنا ٱلإنسـن فى كبد
90:5
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
Ayahsabu al-lai yaqdira ‘alaihi ahad
أيحسب أن لن يقدر عليه أحد
90:6
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalal lubadaa
يقول أهلكت مالا لبدا
90:7
Does he think that no one has seen him?
Ayahsabu al lam yarahooo ahad
أيحسب أن لم يرهۥ أحد
90:8
Have We not made for him two eyes?
Alam naj’al lahoo ‘aynayn
ألم نجعل لهۥ عينين
90:9
And a tongue and two lips?
Wa lisaananw wa shafatayn
ولسانا وشفتين
90:10
And have shown him the two ways?
Wa hadaynaahun najdayn
وهدينـه ٱلنجدين
90:11
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
Falaq tahamal-‘aqabah
فلا ٱقتحم ٱلعقبة
90:12
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
Wa maaa adraaka mal’aqabah
وما أدرىك ما ٱلعقبة
90:13
It is the freeing of a slave
Fakku raqabah
فك رقبة
90:14
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
Aw it’aamun fee yawmin zee masghabah
أو إطعـم فى يوم ذى مسغبة
90:15
An orphan of near relationship
Yateeman zaa maqrabah
يتيما ذا مقربة
90:16
Or a needy person in misery
Aw miskeenan zaa matrabah
أو مسكينا ذا متربة
90:17
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
Summa kaana minal lazeena aamanoo wa tawaasaw bissabri wa tawaasaw bilmarhamah
ثم كان من ٱلذين ءامنوا وتواصوا بٱلصبر وتواصوا بٱلمرحمة
90:18
Those are the companions of the right.
Ulaaa’ika As-haabul maimanah
أولـئك أصحـب ٱلميمنة
90:19
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
Wallazeena kafaroo bi aayaatinaa hum as-haabul Mash’amah
وٱلذين كفروا بـايـتنا هم أصحـب ٱلمشـمة
90:20
Over them will be fire closed in.
Alaihim naarum mu’sadah
عليهم نار مؤصدة
