Surah Al-Qadr


Surah Al-Qadr (The Power) is the 97. surah in Quran.Al-Qadr surah is listed as the 25. by revelation order.

It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. This surah takes its name from the word mentioned in the first ayah.

This surah celebrates the night in which the first verses of the Quran were revealed by Gabriel. This surah also describes the significance of Laylat al-Qadr which is considered to be the night of power or night of decree.

The night of decree is considered a very important night. Its exact timing is unknown but usually considered to be within the last ten days of Ramadan. The third ayat points out that the night of decree is better than a thousand months. 

97:1
Indeed, We sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down during the Night of Decree.
Innaa anzalnaahu fee lailatil qadr
إنا أنزلنـه فى ليلة ٱلقدر
97:2
And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?
Wa maa adraaka ma lailatul qadr
وما أدرىك ما ليلة ٱلقدر
97:3
The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.
Lailatul qadri khairum min alfee shahr
ليلة ٱلقدر خير من ألف شهر
97:4
The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.
Tanaz zalul malaa-ikatu war roohu feeha bi izni-rab bihim min kulli amr
تنزل ٱلملـئكة وٱلروح فيها بإذن ربهم من كل أمر
97:5
Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.
Salaamun hiya hattaa mat la’il fajr
سلـم هى حتى مطلع ٱلفجر
