It is considered to be a Medinan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Medina. However, there is a debate about it being a Meccan surah as well. This surah takes its name from the word mentioned in the first and forth ayah.
The main theme of the Surah is that it addresses why it was necessary for Allah to send down Quran.The beginning of this surah talks about how unbelievers and the people of the book will not know until the clear proof comes to them.
The people of the book were commanded to obey God and the book that was sent down for them. However, they have become divided and fallen into disbelief and for this they will be punished with hell.
The seventh ayah tells that the best of creatures are the ones that believe and do righteous deeds and they will be rewarded in the hereafter.
