Surah Al-Masad


Surah Al-Masad (The Palm Fiber) is the 111. surah in Quran.Al-Masad surah is listed as the 6. by revelation order.

It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. This surah takes its name from the word mentioned in the fifth ayah, it is a rope that in hellfire shall be twisted around the neck of the wife of Abu Lahab. This surah is also known as Lahab (flame). 

This surah addresses Abu Lahab and his wife. Abu Lahab and his wife were enemies of Islam and the prophet Muhammad even though Abu Lahab was the prophet’s uncle. This surah explains their punishment will be severe and nothing will save them from Hell in the afterlife.

111:1
May the hands of Abū Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.
Tabbat yadaa abee Lahabinw-wa tabb
تبت يدا أبى لهب وتب
111:2
His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.
Maa aghnaa ‘anhu maaluhoo wa ma kasab
ما أغنى عنه مالهۥ وما كسب
111:3
He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame
Sa-yaslaa naaran zaata lahab
سيصلى نارا ذات لهب
111:4
And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.
Wamra-atuhoo hammaa latal-hatab
وٱمرأتهۥ حمالة ٱلحطب
111:5
Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.
Fee jeedihaa hablum mim-masad
فى جيدها حبل من مسد
