Surah Ash-Shuara

Surah Ash-Shuara (The Poets) is the 26. surah in Quran.Ash-Shuara surah is listed as the 47. by revelation order.

The meaning of surah Ash-Shuara is The Poets. In total this surah is consist of 227 auahs. You can read Ash-Shuara by word by word if you would like to examine it in details or click one of the ayahs below to check that ayah only.

It is believed to be revealed in Mecca so it is considered as a Meccan surah. The surah was named after the word as-shuara in ayah 224.

This surah talks about various prophets and their tribes, and how the disbelievers were destroyed after threatening the prophets with death. It also talks about the mercy of God (Allah). This surah starts with the story of Moses, followed by that of Abraham. It also talks about other prophets such as Noah, Lot, Hud, Saleh and Shuaib.

God warns the prophet not to fret about people not believing in him as it is not his responsibility for them to believe. These individuals have clung to the fake faith and refused to see the signs and messages shown to them.

This surah also has a famous ayah known as the “warning ayah”(214). This ayah tells the prophet and the believers that you should warn your closest kindreds.

The background of the Surah is that the non-believers of Makkah were skeptics and rejected the message of Islam. They would say Muhammad did not show any sign to convince them of his Prophethood. They would mark him as a poet or a magician, mock his message and disparage his Mission. This situation was causing paing for Muhammad.

26:46
So the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allāh].

26:47
They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,

[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."

26:50
They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.
Qaaloo la daira innaaa ilaa Rabbinaa munqalliboon

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."
Wa awhainaaa ilaa Moosaaa an asri bi’ibaadeee innakum muttaba’oon

26:53
Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers
Fa arsala Fir’awnu filmadaaa’ini haashireen
فأرسل فرعون فى ٱلمدائن حـشرين
26:54
[And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,

And take for yourselves constructions [i.e., palaces and fortresses] that you might abide eternally?

26:205
Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years

26:215
And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to those who follow you of the believers.
Wakhfid janaahaka limanit taba ‘aka minal mu’mineen

26:216
And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."
Fa in asawka faqul innee bareee’um mimmmaa ta’maloon

26:222
They descend upon every sinful liar.

26:223
They pass on what is heard, and most of them are liars.
Yulqoonas sam’a wa aksaruhum kaaziboon

26:224
And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them;

26:225
Do you not see that in every valley they roam
Alam tara annahum fee kulli waadiny yaheemoon

26:226
And that they say what they do not do? -
Wa annahum yaqooloona ma laa yaf’aloon

Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allāh often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.
