It is believed to be revealed in Mecca so it is considered as a Meccan surah. The surah was named after the word as-shuara in ayah 224.
This surah talks about various prophets and their tribes, and how the disbelievers were destroyed after threatening the prophets with death. It also talks about the mercy of God (Allah). This surah starts with the story of Moses, followed by that of Abraham. It also talks about other prophets such as Noah, Lot, Hud, Saleh and Shuaib.
God warns the prophet not to fret about people not believing in him as it is not his responsibility for them to believe. These individuals have clung to the fake faith and refused to see the signs and messages shown to them.
This surah also has a famous ayah known as the “warning ayah”(214). This ayah tells the prophet and the believers that you should warn your closest kindreds.
The background of the Surah is that the non-believers of Makkah were skeptics and rejected the message of Islam. They would say Muhammad did not show any sign to convince them of his Prophethood.They would mark him as a poet or a magician, mock his message and disparage his Mission. This situation was causing paing for Muhammad.
