Surah An-Naba

Surah An-Naba (The Tidings) is the 78. surah in Quran.An-Naba surah is listed as the 80. by revelation order.

The meaning of surah An-Naba is The Tidings. In total this surah is consist of 40 auahs. You can read An-Naba by word by word if you would like to examine it in details or click one of the ayahs below to check that ayah only.

It is considered to be a Meccan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Mecca. The name of surah comes from the second ayah.

This surah starts with talking about unbelievers rejecting the day of the judgment. It continues with describing the wonders of worldly creations. Allah is the only one capable of creating such complex systems like the clouds that pour water onto the vegetation stimulating growth. He created the night and sleep so that we may rest, the mountains as stakes, and the day for livelihood.

The last part talks about the inevitability of Judgment day and what will happen when it comes on earth and in heavens and hell. 39. Ayah reaffirms that only willing people can become true believers.

About what are they asking one another?

‘Amma Yatasaa-aloon

عم يتساءلون

About the great news -

‘Anin-nabaa-il ‘azeem

عن ٱلنبإ ٱلعظيم

That over which they are in disagreement.

Allazi hum feehi mukh talifoon

ٱلذى هم فيه مختلفون

No! They are going to know.

Kallaa sa y’alamoon

كلا سيعلمون

Then, no! They are going to know.

Thumma kallaa sa y’alamoon

ثم كلا سيعلمون

Have We not made the earth a resting place?

Alam naj’alil arda mihaa da

ألم نجعل ٱلأرض مهـدا

And the mountains as stakes?

Wal jibaala au taada

وٱلجبال أوتادا

And We created you in pairs.

Wa khalaq naakum azwaaja

وخلقنـكم أزوجا

And made your sleep [a means for] rest

Waja’alna naumakum subata

وجعلنا نومكم سباتا

And made the night as clothing.

Waja’alnal laila libasa

وجعلنا ٱليل لباسا

And made the day for livelihood.

Waja’alnan nahara ma ‘aasha

وجعلنا ٱلنهار معاشا

And constructed above you seven strong [heavens].

Wa banaina fauqakum sab ‘an shi daada

وبنينا فوقكم سبعا شدادا

And made [therein] a burning lamp

Waja’alna siraajaw wah haaja

وجعلنا سراجا وهاجا

And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water.

Wa anzalna minal m’usiraati maa-an thaj-jaaja

وأنزلنا من ٱلمعصرت ماء ثجاجا

That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation.

Linukh rija bihee habbaw wana baata

لنخرج بهۦ حبا ونباتا

And gardens of entwined growth.

Wa jan naatin alfafa

وجنـت ألفافا

Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -

Inna yaumal-fasli kana meeqaata

إن يوم ٱلفصل كان ميقـتا

The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes

Yauma yun fakhu fis-soori fataa toona afwaaja

يوم ينفخ فى ٱلصور فتأتون أفواجا

And the heaven is opened and will become gateways.

Wa futiha tis samaa-u fakaanat abwaaba

وفتحت ٱلسماء فكانت أبوبا

And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.

Wa suyyi raatil jibaalu fa kaanat saraaba

وسيرت ٱلجبال فكانت سرابا

Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait

Inna jahan nama kaanat mirsaada

إن جهنم كانت مرصادا

For the transgressors, a place of return,

Lit taa gheena ma aaba

للطـغين مـابا

In which they will remain for ages [unending].

Laa bitheena feehaa ahqaaba

لـبثين فيها أحقابا

They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink.

Laa ya zooqoona feeha bar daw walaa sharaaba

لا يذوقون فيها بردا ولا شرابا

Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -

Illa hamee maw-wa ghas saaqa

إلا حميما وغساقا

An appropriate recompense.

Jazaa-aw wi faaqa

جزاء وفاقا

Indeed, they were not expecting an account

Innahum kaanu laa yarjoona hisaaba

إنهم كانوا لا يرجون حسابا

And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.

Wa kazzabu bi aayaa tina kizzaba

وكذبوا بـايـتنا كذابا

But all things We have enumerated in writing.

Wa kulla shai-in ahsai naahu kitaa ba

وكل شىء أحصينـه كتـبا

"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."

Fa zooqoo falan-nazee dakum ill-laa azaaba (section 1)

فذوقوا فلن نزيدكم إلا عذابا

Indeed, for the righteous is attainment -

Inna lil mutta qeena mafaaza

إن للمتقين مفازا

Gardens and grapevines.

Hadaa-iqa wa a’anaa ba

حدائق وأعنـبا

And full-breasted [companions] of equal age.

Wa kaawa ‘iba at raaba

وكواعب أترابا

And a full cup.

Wa ka’san di haaqa

وكأسا دهاقا

No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

Laa yasma’oona fiha lagh waw walaa kizzaba

لا يسمعون فيها لغوا ولا كذبا

[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,

Jazaa-am mir-rabbika ataa-an hisaaba

جزاء من ربك عطاء حسابا

[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.

Rabbis samaa waati wal ardi wa maa baina humar rahmaani laa yam likoona minhu khitaaba

رب ٱلسمـوت وٱلأرض وما بينهما ٱلرحمـن لا يملكون منه خطابا

The Day that the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

Yauma yaqoo mur roohu wal malaa-ikatu saf-fal laa yatakallamoona ill-laa man azina lahur rahmaanu wa qaala sawaaba

يوم يقوم ٱلروح وٱلملـئكة صفا لا يتكلمون إلا من أذن له ٱلرحمـن وقال صوابا

That is the True [i.e., certain] Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.

Zaalikal yaumul haqqu faman shaa-at ta khaaza ill-laa rabbihi ma-aaba

ذلك ٱليوم ٱلحق فمن شاء ٱتخذ إلى ربهۦ مـابا

Indeed, We have warned you of an impending punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"

In naa anzar naakum azaaban qareebaiy-yauma yan zurul marr-u maa qaddamat yadaahu wa ya qoolul-kaafiru yaa lai tanee kuntu turaaba (section 2)

إنا أنذرنـكم عذابا قريبا يوم ينظر ٱلمرء ما قدمت يداه ويقول ٱلكافر يـليتنى كنت تربا
