It is considered to be an Meccan surah as it was revealed in the later period of Mecca when persecutions of the Muslim believers by the polytheists had escalated. The surah takes its name from the Arabic word zumar that occurs in ayat 71 and 73.
This Surah discusses Islam as the true religion. It tells believers to serve Allah and avoid Shirk. The Believers are told not to despair and lose faith. It may be difficult to practice their religion based on the society, but they can migrate from that land. The non-believers are told they can do whatever they wish. There is no compulsion to Islam, but they must understand the consequences. The central theme of this Surah is about true devotion to Allah and compares the fate of the believer to the disbelievers.
It also declares that there can be no reconciliation between believing in God's Oneness and association partners with God. The chapter also reminds readers of the other world, where Muslims believe people will see the outcome of their own deeds.
