It is considered to be a Medinan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Medina. The word al-hujurat is the plural of ḥujra which translates as room, compartment, cell, chamber. Ayah 4 of this surah is the only use of this word in the Quran, and due to this uniqueness, the chapter is named after it.
This Surah contains many lessons for Muslims to live by. It teaches proper social etiquette and to have respect and love for Prophet Muhammad. It advises how to deal with one another and lays out some guidelines to live in a peaceful and harmonious society. It advises against acting on news without verification, a call for peace and reconciliation, as well injunctions against defamation, suspicion, assumption and backbiting.
