Surah Al-Hujurat


Surah Al-Hujurat (The Rooms) is the 49. surah in Quran.Al-Hujurat surah is listed as the 106. by revelation order.

The meaning of surah Al-Hujurat is The Rooms. In total this surah is consist of 18 auahs. You can read Al-Hujurat by word by word if you would like to examine it in details or click one of the ayahs below to check that ayah only.

It is considered to be a Medinan Surah as it was believed to be revealed in Medina. The word al-hujurat is the plural of ḥujra which translates as room, compartment, cell, chamber. Ayah 4 of this surah is the only use of this word in the Quran, and due to this uniqueness, the chapter is named after it.

This Surah contains many lessons for Muslims to live by. It teaches proper social etiquette and to have respect and love for Prophet Muhammad. It advises how to deal with one another and lays out some guidelines to live in a peaceful and harmonious society. It advises against acting on news without verification, a call for peace and reconciliation, as well injunctions against defamation, suspicion, assumption and backbiting.

The 13th ayah, is understood by Muslim scholars to establish equality with regards to race and origin; only God can determine one's nobility based on his piety.

49:1
O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allāh and His Messenger but fear Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
Yaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo la tuqaddimoo baina yada yil laahi wa Rasoolihee wattaqul laah; innal laaha samee’un ‘Aleem
يـأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا لا تقدموا بين يدى ٱلله ورسولهۦ وٱتقوا ٱلله إن ٱلله سميع عليم
49:2
O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.
Yaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa tarfa’ooo aswaatakum fawqa sawtin Nabiyi wa laa tajharoo lahoo bilqawli kajahri ba’dikum liba ‘din an tahbata a ‘maalukum wa antum laa tash’uroon
يـأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا لا ترفعوا أصوتكم فوق صوت ٱلنبى ولا تجهروا لهۥ بٱلقول كجهر بعضكم لبعض أن تحبط أعمـلكم وأنتم لا تشعرون
49:3
Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allāh - they are the ones whose hearts Allāh has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.
Innal lazeena yaghud doona aswaatahum ‘inda Rasoolil laahi ulaaa’ikal lazeenam tah anal laahu quloobahum littaqwaa; lahum maghfiratunw wa’ajrun ‘azeem
إن ٱلذين يغضون أصوتهم عند رسول ٱلله أولـئك ٱلذين ٱمتحن ٱلله قلوبهم للتقوى لهم مغفرة وأجر عظيم
49:4
Indeed, those who call you, [O Muḥammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason.
Innal lazeena yunaadoo naka minw waraaa’il hujuraati aksaruhum laa ya’qiloon
إن ٱلذين ينادونك من وراء ٱلحجرت أكثرهم لا يعقلون
49:5
And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to them, it would have been better for them. But Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
Wa law annahum sabaroo hatta takhruja ilaihim lakaana khairal lahum; wallaahu Ghafoorur Raheem
ولو أنهم صبروا حتى تخرج إليهم لكان خيرا لهم وٱلله غفور رحيم
49:6
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo in jaaa’akum faasiqum binaba in fatabaiyanooo an tuseeboo qawmam bijahalatin fatusbihoo ‘alaa maa fa’altum naadimeen
يـأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا إن جاءكم فاسق بنبإ فتبينوا أن تصيبوا قوما بجهـلة فتصبحوا على ما فعلتم نـدمين
49:7
And know that among you is the Messenger of Allāh. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allāh has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided.
Wa’lamooo anna feekum Rasoolal laah; law yutee’ukum fee kaseerim minal amrila’anittum wa laakinnal laaha habbaba ilaikumul eemaana wa zaiyanahoo fee quloobikum wa karraha ilaikumul kufra walfusooqa wal’isyaan; ulaaaika humur raashidoon
وٱعلموا أن فيكم رسول ٱلله لو يطيعكم فى كثير من ٱلأمر لعنتم ولـكن ٱلله حبب إليكم ٱلإيمـن وزينهۥ فى قلوبكم وكره إليكم ٱلكفر وٱلفسوق وٱلعصيان أولـئك هم ٱلرشدون
49:8
[It is] as bounty from Allāh and favor. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
Fadlam minal laahi wa ni’mah; wallaahu ‘Aleemun Hakeem
فضلا من ٱلله ونعمة وٱلله عليم حكيم
49:9
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allāh. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allāh loves those who act justly.
Wa in taaa’ifataani minal mu’mineena naqtataloo fa aslihoo bainahumaa; fa-im baghat ihdaahumaa ‘alal ukhraa faqaatilul latee tabghee hattaa tafeee’a ilaaa amril laah; fa-in faaa’at fa aslihoo bainahumaa bil’adli wa aqsitoo, innal laaha yuhibbul muqsiteen
وإن طائفتان من ٱلمؤمنين ٱقتتلوا فأصلحوا بينهما فإن بغت إحدىهما على ٱلأخرى فقـتلوا ٱلتى تبغى حتى تفىء إلى أمر ٱلله فإن فاءت فأصلحوا بينهما بٱلعدل وأقسطوا إن ٱلله يحب ٱلمقسطين
49:10
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allāh that you may receive mercy.
Innamal mu’minoona ikhwatun fa aslihoo baina akhawaykum wattaqul laaha la’allakum turhamoon (section 1)
إنما ٱلمؤمنون إخوة فأصلحوا بين أخويكم وٱتقوا ٱلله لعلكم ترحمون
49:11
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name [i.e., mention] of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa yaskhar qawmum min qawmin ‘asaaa anyyakoonoo khairam minhum wa laa nisaaa’um min nisaaa’in ‘Asaaa ay yakunna khairam minhunna wa laa talmizooo anfusakum wa laa tanaabazoo bil alqaab; bi’sal ismul fusooqu ba’dal eemaan; wa mal-lam yatub fa-ulaaa’ika humuz zaalimoon
يـأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا لا يسخر قوم من قوم عسى أن يكونوا خيرا منهم ولا نساء من نساء عسى أن يكن خيرا منهن ولا تلمزوا أنفسكم ولا تنابزوا بٱلألقـب بئس ٱلٱسم ٱلفسوق بعد ٱلإيمـن ومن لم يتب فأولـئك هم ٱلظـلمون
49:12
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.
Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanuj taniboo kaseeram minaz zanni inna ba’daz zanniismunw wa laa tajassasoo wa la yaghtab ba’dukum ba’daa; a yuhibbu ahadukum any yaakula lahma akheehi maitan fakarih tumooh; wattaqul laa; innal laaha tawwaabur Raheem
يـأيها ٱلذين ءامنوا ٱجتنبوا كثيرا من ٱلظن إن بعض ٱلظن إثم ولا تجسسوا ولا يغتب بعضكم بعضا أيحب أحدكم أن يأكل لحم أخيه ميتا فكرهتموه وٱتقوا ٱلله إن ٱلله تواب رحيم
49:13
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allāh is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Aware.
Yaaa ayyuhan naasu innaa khalaqnaakum min zakarinw wa unsaa wa ja’alnaakum shu’oobanw wa qabaaa’ila lita’aarafoo inna akramakum ‘indal laahi atqaakum innal laaha ‘Aleemun khabeer
يـأيها ٱلناس إنا خلقنـكم من ذكر وأنثى وجعلنـكم شعوبا وقبائل لتعارفوا إن أكرمكم عند ٱلله أتقىكم إن ٱلله عليم خبير
49:14
The bedouins say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allāh and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."
Qaalatil-A ‘raabu aamannaa qul lam tu’minoo wa laakin qoolooo aslamnaa wa lamma yadkhulil eemaanu fee quloobikum wa in tutee’ul laaha wa Rasoolahoo laa yalitkum min a’maalikum shai’aa; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem
قالت ٱلأعراب ءامنا قل لم تؤمنوا ولـكن قولوا أسلمنا ولما يدخل ٱلإيمـن فى قلوبكم وإن تطيعوا ٱلله ورسولهۥ لا يلتكم من أعمـلكم شيـا إن ٱلله غفور رحيم
49:15
The believers are only the ones who have believed in Allāh and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allāh. It is those who are the truthful.
Innamal muu’minoonal lazeena aamanoo billaahi wa Rasoolihee summa lam yartaaboo wa jaahadoo biamwaalihim wa anfusihim fee sabeelil laah; ulaaaika humus saadiqoon
إنما ٱلمؤمنون ٱلذين ءامنوا بٱلله ورسولهۦ ثم لم يرتابوا وجـهدوا بأمولهم وأنفسهم فى سبيل ٱلله أولـئك هم ٱلصـدقون
49:16
Say, "Would you acquaint Allāh with your religion while Allāh knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allāh is Knowing of all things?"
Qul atu’allimoonal laaha bideenikum wallaahu ya’lamu maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ard; wallaahu bikulli shai’in ‘Aleem
قل أتعلمون ٱلله بدينكم وٱلله يعلم ما فى ٱلسمـوت وما فى ٱلأرض وٱلله بكل شىء عليم
49:17
They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islām. Say, "Do not consider your Islām a favor to me. Rather, Allāh has conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to the faith, if you should be truthful."
Yamunnoona ‘alaika an aslamoo qul laa tamunnoo ‘alaiya Islaamakum balillaahu yamunnu ‘alaikum an hadaakum lil eemaani in kuntum saadiqeen
يمنون عليك أن أسلموا قل لا تمنوا على إسلـمكم بل ٱلله يمن عليكم أن هدىكم للإيمـن إن كنتم صـدقين
49:18
Indeed, Allāh knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh is Seeing of what you do.
Innal laaha ya’lamu ghaibas samaawaati wal ard; wallaahu baseerum bimaa ta’maloon (section 2)
إن ٱلله يعلم غيب ٱلسمـوت وٱلأرض وٱلله بصير بما تعملون
