It is considered to be a Meccan surah, and it is believed to have been revealed in its entirety during the final year of the Meccan period of Islam. The surah also reports the story of Ibrahim, who calls others to stop worshiping celestial bodies and turn towards Allah.

The surah mentions in ayah 145 which kind of meat is forbidden for Muslims to eat and should be avoided. The surah is called, “the cattle” based on ayah 136-145 where it states that Allah has made Cattle permissible for consumption with no restriction.
