This surah is believed to have been revealed in Mecca. The name, The Heights or Al-A’raf takes its place from the mention in verse 46, 48. The main theme of the surah outlines what has historically happened to those who had rejected the message of the Prophets who came to guide their communities. It mentions Prophet Nuh in verse 59-64, Prophet Hud in 65-72, Prophet Salih in 73-79, Prophet Lut in 80-84, and Prophet Shu’ayb in 85-93.
The surah also gives insight about Prophet Musa and his confrontation with the Pharaoh in verse 103 through 156, more detailed than the story of other prophets. The main message is to warn the Meccan idolaters from worshiping idols and committing shirk and follow the prophet.
The surah also talks about Adam and how the devil disobeyed Allah and did not bow to Adam which resulted in the Devil to be expelled. The story continues with the devil tricking Adam and Eve, and getting him expelled from paradise as well.
